The Indian Premier League, the carnival of cricket is knocking on the door. India is getting ready to witness 8-10 weeks of nail-biting encounters, intense action, sportsmanship, and passion. A brainchild of the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India), IPL has developed into the most exciting and lucrative form of cricket with revenues smashing the charts year on year. Such is the format of the IPL that it engages every age group in some way or the other. The preparations for every season start with the promulgation of an auction strategy which looks to strike the right balance between different profiles and put together a well-balanced squad.

IPL teams are allowed a squad strength of 18-25 players including a maximum of 8 overseas players. All the teams come to the auction table once a year to recruit the best talent across the globe and build their teams for the upcoming season. IPL 2023 player auction saw 80 players being bought for a whopping 167 crore rupees. The most expensive player in the auction was English all-rounder Sam Curran who was bought by the Punjab Kings for 18.5 crore rupees.

MUMBAI INDIANS

Mumbai Indians have put together a squad with an eye on the future. The squad has some of the most talented youngsters in the world. They are building their team around two explosive young batters, Ishan Kishan and Dewald Brewis. Ishan Kishan can be safely called the future of Indian cricket and Mumbai Indians. He proved his doubters wrong when he scored a double hundred against Bangladesh recently. Dewald Brewis caught the eye of a lot of pundits during the last edition of the tournament where he impressed with his 360-degree batting style. The departure of Kieron Pollard may hurt MI this season, but Tim David can be trusted to play the role well. One of the team's biggest strengths is its fast-bowling attack, including Jasprit Bumrah,Jofra Archer and Australian Fast- bowler Jhye Richardson. Mumbai might be a tough team to score against this season, but one of the main weaknesses of this squad is its spin bowling which may not be as good as many would have wanted.

The basic expectation among the MI hierarchy would be to reach the playoff rounds this season.Spin bowling has been a weakness for the team ever since Harbhajan Singh’s departure but in the meantime, they have gone on to win two titles. Will they be able to win it again?

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS

It is safe to say that Chennai Super Kings is a fan-favourite to win the title. But do they really have what it takes to win it, remains to be seen? As always CSK has retained its experienced core with Mahendra Singh Dhoni leading the side. Alongside him will be another superstar of Indian cricket, Ravindra Jadeja. Chennai has strengthened its side by adding Ben Stokes and Kyle Jamieson. With the tournament back to the home-and-away format Jamieson might become central to CSK’s bowling attack because of the conditions at Chepauk. CSK’s biggest strength is their all-rounders and that allows them to bat deep to frustrate teams.

The expectation among the passionate CSK fanbase is always to win the title and the only thing that can stop CSK from winning it for MSD is the age of the squad. With a longer season this year, does CSK have enough gas in their tanks to go all the way?

LUCKNOW SUPERGIANTS

Led by Indian batter, KL Rahul the Supergiants have put together a squad full of explosive batters like De Kock, Stoinis, Pooran and Manan Vohra. It is safe to say that their spin bowling department looks quite good as well. The Indian leg spinner Ravi Bishnoi will lead their bowling attack and his figures for the past two seasons have been nothing short of exemplary. But it is their inexperienced fast bowling that can cost them. Death overs decide the game in IPL and that's where Lucknow Supergiants might lose their games.

The expectation for Lucknow Supergiants should be to finish in a respectable position on the points table but it also might be too early to rule them out of the Top 4 race because it is the IPL we are talking about. The surprises here are normal!!

GUJRAT TITANS

The defending champions and the most well-balanced squad in the league. With the experience of Kane Williamson and Mohammed Shami to the hunger of youngsters like Shubhman Gill, they got everything. Not to mention they also got the trickery of Rashid Khan to bamboozle the opposition batters. It is almost impossible to find a weakness in their playing 11 but one or two injuries might cause a bit of an upset. Slow pitches like the one at Chepauk are also expected to trouble some of their batters.

When it comes to pre-tournament favourites Gujrat Titans are the team that most might choose. They can retain their title as champions of the IPL.

ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE

Many call them the Tottenham Hotspur of the IPL because of their inability to win a single piece of silverware in all these years. They always have had a good squad, but every time tend to lack belief in the tough moments of the game. They are to be led by the experienced batter Du Plessis who is expected to inject the winner’s mentality into the team. Their batting department is a big plus point thanks to Virat Kohli. If he repeats his 2016 heroics no one will be able to stop this team.

Their squad is quite well-balanced with depth in every position. We might see a lot of teams employing mind games against RCB, but they must keep their cool and concentrate on getting the basics right.

SUNRISERS HYDERABAD

They were the most well-prepared when it came to the auction table this year. Having changed their coach this season, they came out with an aim to provide the best possible combination to their new coach this season. SRH broke the bank to recruit young English Batter Harry Brook for a whopping sum of 13.25 crore rupees. Brook impressed many with his exploits in the Test series versus Pakistan in 2022. SRH have also bought Indian batter Mayank Agrawal to further strengthen their batting. Hyderabad’s home ground has big boundaries which certainly means help for wrist spinners. Keeping this in mind SRH has hired leg spinners Mayank Markande and Adil Rashid.

SRH has been criticized for a long time for their conservative batting style during overs 6-16. This is once again expected to be their weakness as they lack quality all-rounders to keep the score ticking at a fast rate in the middle overs. This might be the problem that SRH might face throughout the season, but if they somehow negotiate the middle overs, they certainly got the ingredients to compete for a berth in the playoff rounds.

RAJASTHAN ROYALS

It is a very tough job to find a gap in this team. They have put together a very well-balanced squad which will be coached by Kumar Sangakkara. They are well-equipped with quality spin bowlers like Ravi Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal. Not to mention their star-studded and explosive batting lineup which can chase any total. They have found themselves in a position where their team can excel on almost any kind of wicket they play on. Injuries and team environment are critical in such situations as they are the only obstacle that RR may face.

If there is a team that goes toe to toe with Gujrat Titans in terms of squad balance it is the Rajasthan Royals. Anything less than the title should not be their aim

PUNJAB KINGS

Led by Shikhar Dhawan on the field, Punjab Kings is another team which can score big runs. But they have a serious lack of good bowlers in their squad. If teams find a way to play out the overs of Kagiso Rabada, PBKS do not have any other bowler to bowl in tandem with him and try to stop the flow of runs. PBKS has been heavily criticized in the past for making too many changes in their squad every year. They might have spent a lot in the auction again this year, but they have still not found the perfect squad balance. They ended their auction with 12.2 crore rupees remaining in their purse. With squad gaps and overseas player slots to fill, their controversial auction strategy may come back to hurt them this season.

Their batting lineup will have to fire in every game if PBKS is to progress to playoffs which at this stage looks highly unlikely. Punjab Kings might be the team that may disappoint this year.

DELHI CAPITALS

Coached by Ricky Ponting, Delhi Capitals was very inactive during the auction this year. They only bought some players to maintain squad depth and to fill the gaps caused by some exits. One of the main exits from DC this year was Shardul Thakur’s transfer to KKR. This may cost the Delhi Capitals as this results in a serious lack of experience on their bench. One single injury to any player may derail their season. With Rishabh Pant still recovering from an unfortunate accident late last year, there are reports that he may miss the entire season. Losing your captain even before the season starts is not healthy for the team environment.

If DC stay injury free for the entire season, they may be able to compete for the playoff spots but the “IF” is too big here.

KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS

Lastly, it is important to talk about KKR. KKR has one of the most passionate fanbases in the IPL who create a great atmosphere at Eden Gardens every year. KKR has a good batting unit which can serve dual purposes. They can be aggressive when needed, but they also possess the qualities of resilience when needed. Andre Russel a.k.a Muscle Rusell is expected to be their star again this season. Russell provides KKR with an all-around profile. He provides them with crucial wickets at every juncture and some great firepower towards the end. He is also expected to be helped by Kiwi Fast Bowler Tim Southee who may excel at Eden Gardens. With economical spinners like Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy on their side, teams may find it tough to score against them.

KKR is a serious contender for the playoffs this season, but can they make it? This will totally depend on their ability to bat through the middle overs and bowl in the death overs. Death overs may be the factor that will decide KKR’s season as they lack economical fast bowlers to bowl the final four overs of the game.

CONCLUSION

It is safe to say this year’s IPL is going to be the most exciting one so far. The introduction of 12th Man impact player rule is also an exciting addition to the game which may be adopted by the ICC in T20 matches soon. We are going to witness a multi-team title race this season but in the end, there will be only one winner. The IMD has made no predictions on pre-monsoon rains yet but one prediction that everyone can make is that it is going to rain sixes this summer. Brace yourself to enjoy “INDIA KA TYOHAR.”
